The eight episodes that make up season one are all based on true narratives selected in a series from Epic Magazine and presented, with some alterations, as a gradation of immigrant tales. The show invokes hopefulness and optimism despite the various challenges faced by the characters. The result is a series of heartfelt stories, as uplifting as they are tearjerking. He has no choice but to assimilate, keeping a positive outlook of a world that he mostly knows from the movies he watched as a child with his father.
In that spirit, he proudly struts around in his newly acquired cowboy hat and boots—when he tips his head to two older women, he appears to fit right in. Master Of None has been subtly fucking around with storytelling this season, departing even more from traditional narrative structures than the first season does. It ends with a group swipe sesh—that mean and yet totally fun group activity where you let your friends weigh in as you swipe, turning dating apps into more of a tribunal process. In fact, quite the contrary. Dev immediately establishes different rapports with each of the women, who are loosely sketched but brought to life by charismatic and distinct performances from Tiya Sircar, Lauren Miller Rogen, Alison Barton, Aparna Nancherla, Condola Rashad, Mary Elizabeth Kelly, Pallavi Sastry, and others.
Christine Rogen works at a dog hotel and immediately has a similar dynamic with Dev as his ex-girlfriend Rachel, witty and playful. Nancherla is hilarious in her portrayal of Stephanie, lover of WWE, hater of Mortal Kombat: Annihilation although she watched it twice in a row for some reason , and secretly the woman behind The Rameniac, a ramen blog Dev has read before. Priya abandons Dev at the table for too long when she goes to the bathroom, but she acknowledges it right away, and their date keeps chugging along.
One woman is rude to the server. Another tells a bizarre story about hooking up with the bartender when on a date with a different guy. One date gets interrupted by a Clash Of The Cupcakes superfan. The differences from date to the next open up different outcomes that similarly touch on many ideas at once.
The current coronavirus epidemic has, obviously, played merry hell with the normal Hollywood film release calendar for the next several months—if not years. Faced with a world in which theaters are no longer in operation and would suffer seriously reduced box office draws even if they were , studios are forced to ask themselves some hard questions. More often than not, though, the call has been to delay—although the lengths of those delays have said a lot about what individual studios think about how long the need for quarantine is going to last, ranging from Paramount moving A Quiet Place Part II back a mere 5 months , to F9 dropping back an entire calendar year.
Dating in the Dark premieres at EDT/ CDT tonight on ABC.

The Japanese company Sanrio is responsible for some of the cutest creations in popular culture, and Gudetama is one of its strangest characters, an anthropomorphic egg yolk who just wants to lay around in its soft egg white and eat other food. The problem is that Gudetama is extremely lazy, typically offering advice that will provide the quickest fix—if it fixes anything at all. Wook-Jin Clark and letterer Tom B. This is immediately put on display on the title page, which features a background of Gudetamas lounging around both in and out of their eggshell.
The short comic structure allows Clark to play around with format in different ways, like presenting the stages of a break-up as a board game and using a two-page spread to break down different kinds of romantic gifts and what they mean. The aesthetic of Gudetama: Love For The Lazy channels pure delight with its vibrant palette and exaggerated characterizations, bringing a lot of energy to the romantic interactions.

Dating in the Dark pretty much plays like someone at Endemol your reality TV overlords sat back, furrowed their brows and wondered how they could update The Dating Game. I do enjoy me some Dating Game. And make no mistake. Dating in the Dark is a straight-up copy. They toss in a bunch of other stuff, like a light-sealed room and an infrared camera and a computer that matches people with their perfect matches like, uh, eHarmony, I guess?
The show is hosted by Rossi Morreale in the grim, humorless way that all hosts of these sorts of shows employ. I know this is stupid. You know this is stupid. This makes the show oddly compelling at times. In an effort to speed things along, I guess, the producers have examined the personalities and dating histories of all six contestants three male, three female and paired them off based on who should be most compatible for whom.

Even just a few years ago, there was a healthy amount of stigma attached to meeting someone online. Online dating has bled into the pop culture consciousness at a steady clip; shows like The Mindy Project even worked out a deal to integrate the dating app Tinder into its narrative. Dates , however, lives and dies by online dating. The first two episodes are first dates between mismatched pairs of people. The intimate setting and two-person cast makes each episode feel like a play, which can work when the actors are appealing.
As the Dates drama unfolds, though, the self-important dialogue and blatant stabs at hitting some human truism become more exhausting than illuminating.
